Sophomore Derek Simmons broke his own record in the indoor shot put at LSU.


BATON ROUGE, La. -- Samford's track and field teams are off to a record-breaking start. Four Bulldogs set school records, and the Bulldogs won three events, at Friday's indoor season-opening LSU Twilight Invitational.

Freshman April Howell set the school record in the 60 meter high hurdles with a time of 8.92 seconds. Sophomore Sarah Aultman set a new women's long jump record with a leap of 17' 9.5". Sophomore Pete Fox shattered the old school record in the weight throw by four feet with a mark of 44' 11.5". Sophomore Derek Simmons broke his own school record in the indoor shot put with a mark of 44'0.5".

In addition to the school records, the Bulldogs won three events. Senior Katie Flewellyn won the mile with a time of 5:19. Sophomore Bryan Baddorf won the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:47.

And the women's distance medley team of Flewellyn (1,200 meters), Aultman (400 meters), freshman Jessica Brewer (800 meters) and freshman Michelle Brewer (1,600 meters) won its race with a time of 12:23, missing yet another school record by four tenths of a second.

Although team results were not available immediately after the completion of all events, Coach Glenn McWaters was very pleased with his teams' performance.

"This is the way we want to start the season," McWaters said. "This was a very strong opening meet for us."
