Men's Track And Field Finishes Fourth, Women's Team Place Fifth To End O'Reilly/ OVC Championships, Saturday

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.-- The Samford University track and field teams completed the O'Reilly/ OVC Championships, hosted by Austin Peay State University on Saturday (May 7). The Samford men's team finished in fourth place overall with 71.50 points, while the women's team placed fifth with 92 points. Michael Smith automatically qualified for the NCAA Regionals in his individual events. Almost regionally qualifying for the NCAA's, Howell finished the women's triple jump in second place with a Samford all-time record leap of 40-2 (12.24m), just .02 shy of a NCAA qualifying mark. Micheal Smith took second place in the in the 400m hurdles with a Samford all-time record time of 51.90 and a third-place finish in the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.28 to qualify for the regionals. Also performing on top for the Bulldogs, Lauren Blankenship won the crown in the 5000m run with a time of 17:14.35, while finishing second in the 1500m run with a Samford all-time record time of 4:31.87. Robyn DeBenedet placed fourth in the 1500m run with a time of 4:38.59, while Britney Almaguer finished fifth in the same event (4:39.42) and placed second in the 5000m run with a time of 17:58.47. Michelle Brewer finished in third place in the 5000m run (18:00.49), while her sister Jessica Brewer took fifth place (18:24.82) in the same event. On the men's side, Samford's Derek Simmons placed second in the discus with a toss of 47.93m, while Bryan Baddorf took second in the 10,000m run (31.20.22) and seventh in the 5000m run (15:26.86). Samford's Drew Anderwald took fourth in the 10,000m run with a time of 31:28.78.
The Bulldogs will head to the Georgia Tech Invitational on Friday-Saturday, May 13-14. The competition will be held at the George C. Griffin Track in Atlanta, Ga. Friday's meet will begin at 6 p.m. EST, while Saturday's competition is set for 9 a.m. EST. |
