Distance Runners Highlight Auburn Invitational
April 22, 2006 AUBURN, Ala. ---- The Samford University track and field turned in 19 top-10 finishes at the Auburn Invitational on Saturday. The Bulldogs were led by their distance runners, who tallied 9 top-10 finishes. Michael Hanson and Chris West finished first and second, respectively, in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase. Hanson won the event, with a time of 9:40.85, while West ran a 9:51.59 to finish second. Additionally, Joel Shaw finished fifth with a time of 10:23.16. Michelle Brewer finished second in the women's 5000-meter run, with a time of 17:20.52. Connie Heiskell turned in an eighth place-finish in the 5000 meters, with a time of 18:21.46. On the men's side, Cameron Bean finished fourth in the 5000 meters, with a time of 15:05.78. Drew Anderwald turned in a time of 15:14.39 in the 5000 meters to finish sixth, and Ricky McLain finished 10th with a time of 15:25.00. Robyn DeBenedet ran a 4:42.20 in the women's 1500-meter run. DeBenedet finished eighth in the event. The Bulldogs turned in several strong finishes in the hurdles and field events as well. April Howell tied for third in the women's triple jump, with a leap of 38'05.00". Howell also finished seventh in the 100-meter hurdles, with a time of 14.18. Additionally, the Samford pole vaulters finished well. Cameron Cardwell finished third in the women's pole vault, with a mark of 10'11.75''. On the men's side, Trent Schmidt finished fourth with a mark of 15'07.00''. Mark Holmes finished fifth in the event, with the same mark.
Michael Smith finished fifth in the men's 400-meter hurdles, with a time of 53.01. On the women's side, Kady Deck ran a 1:04.42 to finish 10th in the 400-meter hurdles. Laura Malnati finished fourth in the women's high jump with a leap of 5'05.00". Additionally, Bill Kirtland finished seventh in the men's triple jump with a leap of 40'04.00" and Pete Fox finished eighth in the hammer throw, with a mark of 133'10.00''. The Samford University track and field team returns to action on May 5, when the team heads to the 2006 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. |
