STARKVILE, Miss. - The Samford University track and field team took four events at the Mississippi State Bulldog Invitational on Saturday (April 2) at the Carl Maddox Track, located on the campus of Mississippi State University. Mississippi State took the crown on the men's side, while LSU took the crown on the women's side. For the Bulldogs, the men's team finished in third place with 105 ½ points, while the women's team placed third with a score of 45 points. On the men's side, Michael Smith won the 400m hurdles with a time of 53.92, while Mark Holmes took the individual crown in the pole vault with a leap of 15-00.00. Also competing well for the Bulldogs, Bryan Baddorf finshed second overall in the 5000m with a time of 15:23.00, while not far behind Drew Anderwald placed third in the same event with a time of 15:26.56. Samford's Chad Johnson placed third in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:40.64, while Eric Holsomback finished in third place in the javelin throw with a toss of 157-04 and Derek Simmons also placed third in the discus throw with a toss of 147-11. On the women's side, Jessica Brewer took the individual crown in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 11:01.65, while Laura Malnati won the high jump with a leap of 5-06.00. Also competing well for Samford, Robyn DeBenedet placed third in the 800m with a time of 2:18.47, while Connie Heiskell finished in fourth place in the 5000m with a time of 18:59.06. The women's 4x100m relay team also placed third in its event with a time of 49.90.00. Selected individual from the Samford track and field team will travel to compete at the Texas Relays on Wednesday-Saturday, April 6-9 in Austin, Tex.
