Track And Field Garners 33 Top-10 Finishes At Troy
April 1, 2006 TROY, Ala. --- The Samford University track and field teams turned in 33 top-ten finishes at the Coach `O' Invitational, hosted by Troy University in Troy, Ala., on Saturday. The Bulldogs won five events at the meet, as several athletes had impressive performances in the meet. Samford's April Howell provided one of the highlights of the day, winning in two events. Howell won the 100-meter hurdles, with a time of 14.05, and had a leap of 39'08 ½'' to win the triple jump. Cameron Cardwell finished first in the women's pole vault. Cardwell turned in a mark of 11'05 ¾''. On the men's side, Michael Smith won the 400-meter hurdles, with a time of 52.64. Additionally, Ricky McLain won the men's 3000-meter steeplechase, with a time of 10:10.85. Laura Malnati finished second in the women's high jump, with a leap of 5'05'', while Kady Decker finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.86. Additionally, Malnati finished fourth in the javelin throw, with a mark of 102'08''. In addition to Howell, three other women's hurdlers turned in top-10 finishes in the 100-meter hurdles. Daphne Anderson finished third, with a time of 14.76, while Lakeita Rox finished just behind her in fourth with a time of 14.94. Ciara Floyd finished ninth in the event, turning in a time of 16.00. The Samford women also turned in strong performances in the 3000-meter event. Connie Heiskell finished second in the event, with a time of 10:52.19. Jessica Brewer ran an 11:04.16 to finish fourth and Katie Almand ran an 11:11.76 to finish fifth.
In the women's 100 meters, Anderson finished sixth with a time of 12.51, and Tiffany King finished eighth with a time of 12.85. Additionally, Rox ran a 13.05 in the event to finish 10th. Samford had two top-10 finishes in the women's 400 meters. Ashley Flowers ran a 59.93 to finish seventh, while Mary Nunnally finished eighth, with a time of 1:00.27. Amy Voorhies finished ninth in the 800 meters, posting a time of 2:33.45 and Floyd finished sixth in the long jump with a leap of 16'04 ½''. The men's pole vaulters had a strong showing as a whole. Mark Holmes and Trent Schmidt both tied for second place with marks of 15'01''. James Steinberger finished fourth in the event with a mark of 13'07 ½'', and Jon Londeen finished fifth with a mark of 13'01 ½''. In the men's high jump, Asa Ackerson finished fifth with a leap of 6'00 ¾''. In addition, Steinberger finished fifth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.28. Bill Kirtland turned in two top-10 finishes. Kirtland placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 42'00 ¼'', and seventh in the long jump, with a leap of 20'04 ¼''. Additionally, Justin Goetze turned in a jump of 19'06''in the long jump to finish 10th. Goetze also finished 10th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.81. In the 1500-meter run, Michael Hanson finished third, with a time of 4:09.65. Bo Brawner finished sixth in the event after running a 4:13.10. Pete Fox had a throw of 138'06'' to finish sixth in the hammer throw. The relay teams also turned in strong finishes. The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Anderson, Decker, Flowers and Nunnally turned in a time of 3:55.21. The men's 4x100-meter relay team of Ackerson, William Atwell, Cortland Finnegan and Goetze finished fourth overall, with a time of 44.58. Additionally, the women's 4x100-meter relay team of Anderson, Decker, Flowers and Floyd finished fifth with a time of 48.84.
