BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Samford University track and field team hosted the Samford Invitational today (March 12) at Seibert Stadium.

In field events, Samford's Ciara Floyd took the women's long jump with a leap of 17-01.25, while on the men's side Bulldog Michael Smith took this event with a jump of 21-02.00, while Samford's Austin Walker finished third (18-01.50) and James Steinberger finished fourth (17-10.25).

In the women's triple jump, UAB's Tiffany Parker finished first with a leap of 36-04.00, while on the men's side Calvin's Luke Allison took this event with a leap of 43-09.75 and teammate Tim Zwiers finished second (43-01.50). Samford's Robert Weaver placed third with a leap of 40-11.50.

In the women's high jump, Samford's Laura Malnati took this event with leap of 5-05.00, while Calvin's Kimberly Vanderzee and Clark-Atlanta's Nikki Hill tied for second place. On the men's side, Samford's Robert Weaver took the event with a leap of 6-00.75.

In the men's javelin throw, Calvin's Nate Meckes won with a toss of 169-01, while Samford's Eric Holsomback finshed in second place (143-09). On the women's side, Clark-Atlanta's Tamara Nelson took the event with a toss of 133-04, while Calvin's Christine Hendricks placed second with a toss of 121-10.

In the women's pole vault, Calvin's Missy Smith took the event with leap of 12-05.50, while Samford's Tracy Walz finished seventh with a leap of 8-06.25.On the men's side, Samford's Mark Holmes took the event with a leap of 15-00, while Samford's Trent Schmidt (Unattached) finished second (14-06.00) and James Steinberger placed third (12-11.75).

In the women's discus throw, Kendra Wise finished first unattached with a toss of 123-07, while Clark-Atlanta's Tamara Nelson placed second (118-06). On the men's side, Calvin's Nate Meckes finished first with a toss of 168-07, Michael Heck (Unattached) placed second (155-02) and Samford's Derek Simmons finished third with a toss of 149-10.

In the women's shot put, Calvin's Megann VanderVliet took the event with a toss of 40-09.00, while on the men's side Michael Heck tossed unattached (54-07.25) and Calvin's Nate Meckes placed second with a toss of 53-08.50. Samford's Eddie Mason finished in third place with a toss of 46-03.50.

On the track, Samford's Lauren Blankenship took the event title in the mile run with a time of 5.00, while teammate Britney Almaguer finished second with a time of 5:02.81. On the men's side, Ryan McKay ran unattached and finished first (4:21.04), while Calvin's Jon Gries finished second with a time of 4:22.15. Samford's Drew Anderwald placed seventh overall out of 17 competitors with a time of 4:28.

Samford's Jessica Brewer took the crown in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:37.66, while Kennesaw State's Kelly Bloom finished second (13:09.76). On the men's side, Kennesaw State's Lukasz finished in first place (9:40.14), while Samford's Chad Johnson placed second (9:48.87), Bulldog Michael Hanson finished third (9:55.78) and Drew Anderwald placed third (10:08.80).

In the women's 5000-meter run, Samford's Michelle Brewer took the event crown with a time of 17:51.10. Bulldog Connie Heiskell finished the same event in third place with a time of 19:01.37. On the men's side, Calvin's Kris Koster took he event title with a time of 15:21.84, while teammate Jeff Engbers finished second (15:24.49) and Samford's Bryan Baddorf placed third. (15:26.93).

In the women's 800-meter run, Robyn DeBenedet won with a time of 2:20.72, while Calvin's Camille Medema placed second (2:23.16) and Samford's Starr Gager finished third (2:25.66). On the men's side, Samford's Patrick Weaver took this event with a time of 1:54.78, while JSU's Robert Stephenson placed second (1:56.57).

In the women's 400-meter dash, Samford's Mary Nunnally took the event with a time of 58.95, while Bulldog Sarah Aultman finished second (59.65).On the men's side, Rico Tilley ran unattached and finished first with a time 50.67, while Clark-Atlanta's Jason White placed second with a time of 52.68.

In the women's 100-meter hurdles, Samford's April Howell took the event with a time of 14.39. On the men's side in the 110-meter hurdles, Samford freshman Michael Smith took the event with a time of 15.21.

Kennesaw State's Julita Kusmierek took the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.90, while Calvin's Laura Hamilton finished second (1:05.00). On the men's side, Clark-Atlanta's Jason White finished first with a time of 57.94, while Samford's Kevin Carnall placed second with a time of 58.71.

In the women's 100-meter dash, Kennesaw State's Salethia Mims took this event with a time of 12.27. On the men's side, Clark-Atlanta's Jimmy Maddox took the event with a 10.97.

In the women's 200-meter dash, Calvin's Sue Abbring took the event with a time of 25.49, while Samford's Tiffany London finished second (25.76). On the men's side, Rico Tilley (Unattached) finished first (22.10), while Samford's Michael Smith placed second with a time of 22.36 and Calvin's Joel Baker took third (22.39).

The Bulldogs won the women's 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:14.14, while Calvin College won on the men's side (3:29.37).

The Bulldogs will head to the Alabama Relays on Thursday-Sunday, March 17-20, hosted by the University of Alabama, located in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Meet time is TBA.
