Track And Field Breaks Five Records, Wins Five Events

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Samford's track and field teams won five events and set five school indoor records at the LSU Last Chance Indoor Track and Field meet Friday at Louisiana State. With the indoor season concluded, the Bulldogs now turn their attention to the first outdoor event, the Samford Open, on March 15. For the women, freshman Jennifer Craig set a school record in the 200 meters with a time of 25.94 seconds. Freshman April Howell broke her own school record, set two weeks ago, in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.79 seconds. Sophomore Sarah Aultman continued her outstanding indoor season, breaking her own school record in the long jump with a leap of 19'4". Aultman jumped 17'9.5" at the opening indoor meet. Aultman's success continued in the 400 meters, as she won that event with a time of 58.31 seconds. Senior Katie Flewellyn was a winner for the second straight meet, with a victory in the 800 meters. Flewellyn won the mile in the first indoor meet. Senior Erin Giesa was victorious in the women's 3,000 meters.
The men's team had a remarkable meet as well, as senior Josh Caldwell broke the school record in the indoor shot put with a mark of 45'10". Senior Keeton Blakeney broke sophomore Pete Fox's two-week old school record in the 35-lb. weight throw. Blakeney won the event with a mark of 46'02.5". Fox finished second in the weight throw. Sophomore Bryan Baddorf remained undefeated in the indoor 3,000 meters, winning the event for the second straight meet. In all, the Bulldogs set nine school records and won eight events during the two-meet indoor season. Samford hopes the success carries over to the outdoor season, which begins next weekend. The Bulldogs host the Samford Open on March 15.
