Malnati, Hanson Win At Florida State
March 4, 2006 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. --- The Samford University track and field team turned in 14 top-ten finishes at the 2006 FSU Snowbird Invitational in Tallahassee, Fla., on Saturday. High jumper Laura Malnati and distance runner Michael Hanson highlighted the day with victories in their respective events. Malnati tied her outdoor school record in the event, with a leap of 5'07'', to win the high jump competition on Saturday. Hanson turned in a time of 9:47.26 in the 3000-meter steeplechase, to capture the title in the event. "I was really proud of the kids today, and the way they performed, especially Laura Malnati and Michael Hanson," said Samford head coach Glenn McWaters. "They both performed really well, and we got the outdoor season off to a really good start. Kady Decker ran a 57.70 in the 400-meter dash. Decker finished second overall, but was first among collegiate athletes. Mary Nunnally finished eighth overall in the 400-meter dash, running a 59.06, and Ashley Flowers ran a 1:00.21 to finish 13th. Three Bulldog pole vaulters garnered top-five finishes. Cameron Cardwell was second overall in the women's pole vault, with a mark of 10' 11 ¾''. In the men's pole vault, Mark Holmes finished third with a mark of 14' 07 ¼'', while Trent Schmidt reached the same height to finish fifth. April Howell finished second overall in the triple jump, with a leap of 38' 04 ¾''; and, thrower Pete Fox earned a distance of 135' 04'' in the hammer throw to finish seventh. Michael Smith finished ninth overall in the 400-meter dash, running a 49.49 in the event.
The Bulldogs turned in three top-10 finishes in the women's 100-meter hurdles. Lakeita Rox finished fifth overall with a time of 15.26, with Ciara Floyd right behind her, finishing sixth with a time of 15.29. Daphne Anderson ran a 15.66 to finish ninth overall. Anderson and Rox, along with Tiffany King and Amy Voorhies, finished third overall in the 4x100-meter relay, with a time of 49.06. The Samford University track and field team returns to action on March 15, when the Bulldogs head to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the Alabama Relays, hosted by the University of Alabama. |
