Bulldogs Run Well at Eastern Illinois

CHARLESTON, Ill. - The Samford University men's and women's track and field teams continued their assault on the Bulldog record book over the weekend, breaking 10 school records and claiming seven event titles at the Eastern Illinois Friday Night Special. The women's team enjoyed a particularly successful meet, claiming six individual and relay titles. Freshman LaToya Cunningham recorded the best meet of her young career, winning the 400 meters with a time 58.77 and finishing second in the 200 meters with a 26.04, both of which set school records. Katie Flewellyn won the mile run and broke another school record, posting a time of 5:08.15. Leah Reed followed with the 600-meter title, setting a school best of 1:39.01. In relays, the women also claimed the distance medley title with a time of 12:38.84 and posted the top mark of 4:08.13 in the 4x400 meters. In field events, Angela Smith set the school record and won the triple jump with a jump of 36'00.25". Freshman Hannah Smith also broke the school record and finished ninth in the weight throw with an effort of 33'03.25". For the Bulldog men, highlights included Nate Russell setting a school best and winning the long jump with a mark of 22'08.25". Senior Paul von Herrmann also participated in the record-setting, finishing third in the 600 meters with a Bulldog best of 1:21.40, while Brett Baddorf finished third in the 3000 meters and broke a school record with a time of 8:42.31. In only their second collegiate meet, freshmen Derek Simmons and Pete Fox also etched their names in the Samford record book in field events. Simmons placed fifth in the shot put with a toss of 42'07.00" and Fox finished seventh with an effort of 40'10.25" in the 35-pound weight throw.
