LEXINGTON, Ky. ---- The Samford University track and field capped off the Rod McCravy Memorial, hosted by the University of Kentucky, on a high note on Saturday, with two school record performances and seven top-ten finishes in individual events.

"This was our season opener, so we were very pleased by the performances by everyone," said Samford head coach Glenn McWaters. "They seem to have come back to school in good shape and they just did really well this weekend. I'm looking forward to a good season, and I think we're going to have a pretty good team this year."

Pole vaulter Mark Holmes tied his school record with a mark of 15'1'', finished second overall in the event. Holmes had originally set the record in 2005 at the Ohio Valley Conference Championship.

Michael Smith ran a 50.12 in the 400 meters, breaking John Mitchell's record of 50.29, set in 1998. Smith also turned in a sixth place finish in the 60-meter hurdles, with a time of 8.34.

Cortland Finnegan fell just short of a school record in the 60-meter dash. Finnegan finished sixth in the event and ran a 6.94, while the school record is 6.93, set by John Williams in 2002.

Britney Almaguer finished eighth overall in the 3000-meter run, turning in a time of 10:23.49. Laura Malnati finished fifth in the high jump, with a time of 5'2 ¼'' and Kady Decker was ninth in the 400 meters, posting a time of 58.69. Additionally, Bill Kirtland finished 10th in the long jump with a mark of 20' 2 ½''.

The Samford University track and field team returns to action on February 10 and 11, when it heads to Clemson, S.C., for the Clemson Tiger Invitational.
