Track Finishes Fourth and Fifth at McDonald's Invitational

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Samford broke school records in the men's 60 meter run and the long jump as the men's and women's track teams opened their seasons at the McDonald's Invitational at the SIC Rec Center on Saturday.

Freshman John Williams ran the 60 meters in a time of 6.93, breaking the previous school indoor record of 7.10 set by Derrick Moore in 2000. Williams' time was .20 behind McKendree College sprinter Marlon Barnaby's time of 6.73.

Three Bulldogs broke the school indoor mark in the long jump of 20-05.50, ironically enough in consecutive attempts. Freshman Paul Teinert set the first mark of 21-03.25, followed by Josh Jones' jump of 21-03.50. Two jumps later freshman Nate Russell established the new current school record of 22-05.75.

Freshman Bryan Baddorf won the 5000 meter run with a time of 15:21.34 and Paul von Herrmann finished second in the 1000 meters with a time of 2:29.36 as other top performances for the men.

For the women, highlights include a third place finish for Katie Flewellyn in the 1600 meter run (5:16.40), and Kristin Fortier placed in a tie for second in the pole vault (8-00.50). The women's distance medley also finished second with a time of 12:30.51.

Samford competed against several of its future competitors from the Ohio Valley Conference, including Southeast Missuori State, Murray State, and Tennessee Tech.

Southern Illinois recorded 156 points, easily besting Southeast Missouri State (98.5), Murray State (68.5), Samford (65), Rend Lake (42), Lincoln University (37), McKendree (30), Jackson State (18).

The Saluki women also won the team competition with 141 points, placing just ahead of Southeast Missouri State (130), and well ahead of Lincoln (52), Austin Peay (51), Samford (42.5), Murray State (38.5), McKendree (32), Tennessee Tech (19) and Jackson St. (12).
