The Nickname "Bulldogs"

On December 14, 1916, the Howard athletic teams became known as the Bulldogs. The student body by a two to one vote chose the "Crimson Bulldogs" over the "Baptist Bears." The winning theme was that a Bulldog could eat more Birmingham-Southern "Panther" meat than a bear.

Prior to that Howard was known as the "Baptist Tigers". However, that was unacceptable because it was the same nickname as another rival, Auburn. The team also went by "Baptist Bears" before the 1916 vote.
