Peter Neuberger

Player Profile

Hometown:
Milwaukee, Wis.

Position:
Senior Associate Director of Athletics

Alma Mater:
Wisconsin-Oshkosh, 1978

With one of the longest tenures in the Samford Athletic Department spanning three decades, Peter Neuberger commences his 22nd year at Samford and his 15th as Senior Associate Director of Athletics. His responsibilities involve the coordination of all internal operations, primarily as overseer of all athletic department academic matters, including the Academic Enhancement Program (AEP), advising undeclared student-athletes and institutional point person for the NCAA Academic Performance Program (APP). Neuberger acts as the bridge/liaison between the athletics department and the university academic community.

Since his shift to the administrative side of athletics from the coaching ranks in 1991, Neuberger developed the institution's compliance, eligibility and academic infrastructural as per NCAA legislation to member institutions in the early 1990's. He has overseen both Samford's NCAA Self-Study Reports and Certification Accreditation in 1995 and 2002 and has been instrumental in the direction of the NCAA Academic Performance Program (APP) from an institutional leadership standpoint.

With the implementation of the Academic Progress Rate (APR) by the NCAA, replacing the federally mandated graduation rates, Samford, under Neuberger's guidance has posted high scores from 2003-2007. In 2003-2004, Samford was tied for seventh nationally with Howard, Bradley and the U.S. Naval Academy in the Inaugural APR score/rank with a 990 (out of 1000). In the 2004-2005 APR ranking, Samford was one of 64 institutions nationally with at least eight sports above an APR score of at least 990 or above. In the last two years, 2005-2007, Samford has averaged at least five teams in the top ten percent of all squads in their respective sport and have been honored with Public Recognition Award by the NCAA.

Under Neuberger's leadership, Samford earned multiple Conference All-Academic trophies before joining the Ohio Valley Conference. In a span from 1995-2001, Samford earned the Atlantic Sun All-Academic Trophy four out of the last five years. In a span of ten years, 1995-2005, an average of fifty percent of Samford's student-athletes earned and maintained a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. In Samford's recently ended five-year stay in the Ohio Valley Conference, a record number of Samford student- athletes earned their spot on the Commissioner's Honor Roll (annual GPA of 3.25 or above).

From the onset of the program, Neuberger has created an environment conducive to academic success by implementing a personal tutorial, advising and monitoring network within the Samford community to take advantage of all educational services available to student athletes.

Neuberger is well-known and respected throughout the Samford academic community. In addition to teaching one of Samford's Foundation courses for entering freshmen, he works as an adjunct in the Office of Freshmen Life, advising and mentoring freshmen as part of the Success Program. Furthermore, he has taught as a part-time instructor in the School of Education's Exercise and Sports Medicine Program (ESSM), teaching Concepts of Fitness/Health and Fitness Running.

A Milwaukee, Wisc. native, he played professional basketball and taught in Europe for eight years (1978-1986), before coming to Samford. During that time overseas, he was Assistant Athletics Director, Varsity Basketball and Cross-Country Coach and taught foreign languages at the American International School in Vienna, Austria. Neuberger has lived, studied and played basketball in Austria, Mexico, Italy and Spain. He is fluent in Spanish and German and has a working knowledge of Italian and French.

Before moving into athletics administration, Neuberger spent five-seasons as the head assistant coach with the Bulldog Basketball Program. He earned a B.S. in Spanish/Education from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 1978. Neuberger played basketball there and was All-Conference, All-District and an Academic All-American Selection. He was a National Fulbright Scholar in 1978 and the School's Outstanding Scholar Student-Athlete.

An avid runner, Neuberger is a seven-time Boston Marathon Finisher with a personal best of 3:05. He earned a M.A. in International Relations and Human Relations from Webster University (Vienna Campus) in 1983. He and his wife, Becky, have two sons, Andrew, a Samford senior and Scott, a senior at Homewood High School.
